| 概説 | 中国では古来より漢方薬の原料として、日本では奈良後期から布や木工製品の塗料として使われてきた。 「源氏物語」の賢木（さかき）の巻には、クチナシの果実で濃黄色に染めた着物の美しい袖口が描かれている。 6月頃クチナシは白い花を咲かせ、秋に実がなるが、熟しても口が開かないことから、「口無し」と名付けられたと言う説。 たくさんの種子をたくわえて黄・橙色に熟す様子が果実のナシに似ており、実の部分にあるくちばし状のガクを口に見立てて、口を持つナシから名付けたという説。 中国名の「梔子（くちなし）」には中国の徳利の形に似ている事からこれに木偏をつけて名付けられたという説。 日本、中国、台湾などの温暖地帯の山中に自生する常緑樹。 ジャスミンに似た強くて甘い香りをもつ白い花を咲かせ、園芸植物としても用いられている。 ハーブの一種 [実]苦い冷却性のハーブ。 | Summary | In China, it has been used as an ingredient of herbal medicine since the antiquity. The fruit does not open even when ripe. There are many theories about how it gets the name. It is an evergreen tree, native to Japan, China, Taiwan, growing in mountaneous areas in temperate zones.
